Key to navigating the low E and A strings:

  • E to F and B to C are 1 fret apart, also known as a “half step.”
  • All other adjacent notes are 2 frets apart, also known as a “whole step.”
  • The open fret between notes is a sharp (#) or flat (b). For example, the 2nd fret of the low E string is an F# or a Gb.
  • Whether a note is a sharp or flat depends on what key you are in, and related to the circle of 5ths. This is another topic altogether, and usually not the highest priority for chord or scale navigation.
